constant crashing on save in the Max 8 editor. OS X 10.12.6, Live 10.0.1, Max 8.0.0

I'm pretty new to patching w max for live, but I'm deep into building a looper with the karma~ external. In the past week I've started to have an issue where when I save in Max 8 I get a hang, first in Max (OS spinner) and then Live will either hang with a spinner too or just crash.

When I restart live if I choose to restore my lost work it will hang/crash again.

So resolve I have to force quit Live and Max, then load from a saved session in Live and edit again. The problem happens maybe every 5th-10th time I save to go back to Live to test.

Any help from the experienced patchers here?

Hard to give any advice without knowing the depth/breadth of the device.
I've always had the occasional crash when saving when working on complex devices.
