I have a multichannel VST plugin, and, as far as I understand the only way to have it work within Ableton is to load it into a Max for Live patch. Now, the only remaining problem I have is how to automate the VST plugin parameters inside the Max for Live patch. Ideally, I want to get to a situation where I can do everything as if the plugin was loaded directly on a track in Ableton. To restate the question: is it possible to automate internal parameters of a Max for Live patch?

You'll need to use some UI elements that are exposed to Live's automation system. live.dial, .slider, etc. Then point the values coming out of those to parameters of your VST.
