Modulation mode: Bipolar vs Additive

Post by sefable » Tue Oct 15, 2019 9:08 pm

Hello,

I have been playing with the different modulation mode for a max for live device.

I can not figure out what is the difference between bipolar and additive, they seem to behave the same but I'm certain it's me not figuring out what's the difference..

Could someone guide me to a documentation? I couldn't find any on the web.

Thanks!

I’m not sure which device you’re referring to, but the terms “bipolar” and “unipolar” are often used to describe two types of modulation. I’m assuming that “additive” is equivalent to “unipolar.”

Bipolar means that the modulation is occurring around a central, unmodulated point in both directions, usually conceived as positive and negative directions. Unipolar means that the modulation is occurring in only one direction from the unmodulated point.

To illustrate:

Bipolar = range of -1 to 1

Unipolar = range of 0 to 1
