How do you deal with long presses / double presses of MIDI remote note messages ?

Post by chapelier fou » Tue Jul 21, 2020 9:56 am

I can't find a good solution. How would you detect that a "button" is being pressed for some time ? Or double-tapped ?
I can do this easily using MIDI track notes, but when it comes to MIDI Remote (via the mapping system), I've got several problems.

- live.text in button mode will record automation for itself in a clip. (I'd really love to have a "mappable only" as an option, like "hidden", "stored only", "automated and stored")
- live.text in toggle mode has no way to behave like "note on : 1 / note off : 0".

Hope you see the issue.

Small example as I'm trying to make a patch to delete clips as an answer to this topic viewtopic.php?f=1&t=240043&sid=b7accfb6 ... 3e4a59d2f3

Thanks for making me discovering [hover]
but I don't want to use the mouse. The goal is to use the same remote MIDI note that I use to trigger the recording to delete the current clip.

Would be good for you a velocity mapping concept instead of single/doubleclick?

I mean if you press softly (under 60 velocity) is A, if you press hard (over 60 velocity) is B.

Of course I don't know if you are talking about a controller with velocity... let me know.

Sounds that there would be the same problem : it would involve MIDI track input instead of the Remote mapping system.
I never mentioned the idea of mouse clicks.
Thanks !

Sorry, I meant button presses, not mouse clicks.

Maybe there is something that I miss...
Could you explain what type of device is your input as button?

I see that you need an audio MAX effect with no automation recorded, is it correct?

Simple case of use :

I'm using clips and not looper to record loops. I mapped one note from my midi foot controller to the track global play button. I want a long press of the same note to delete the clip.

Just use [metro] (and e.g [count]), make it count when it receives your midi control message.

And use this external for direct midi input in your device (so you don't need midi mapping).

Thanks for the answer. I have no problem with the Max side of detecting long presses. It's more how to make them happen with the mapping system, when MIDI notes are mapped to a toggle or live.text. Using MIDI track input, no problem.
I'll have a look at imp.midi, that could probably do the trick, although I'd rather not use externals.
That leads me to this questions : are external objects included in a frozen max device, making it actually shareable ?

Yep. And imp.midi is cross-platform, and is perfectly reliable in my experience.
