The Official Xone 4D Midi Mapping Thread

Post by Night Spirit » Sat Dec 20, 2008 5:08 pm

Just got my Xone 4D yesterday and have been having a lot of fun customizing it for my liveset. I was hoping to bounce some ideas around with other owners as far as setting up the midi controls. Right now I have the midifaders controlling 8 midi tracks withthe lighted midi channel buttons as the on/off for eavh track. The pots above the tracks I am using for a reverb and delay send and abovethat I think I will use those push pots for navigating up and down clip scenes. I'm not sure what to do with that jog dial though and am curious how other people are using theirs. Thanks!

Like i said in another thread I also got mine yesterday.
Not allowed it untill christmas :(
Feel like a child

I know the two jog wheels can be used in Tracktor like CDJ's.
Its going to be interesting setting up effects, as I was going to go ahead and get a KP3. Hope ableton satisfies my needs.
By the way, how are you finding it?

I just had a great session with my buddy using it last night. i was using the Xone and he was changing stuff directly within ableton. we kept ourselves entertained with a simple 2 bar techno beat for almost an hour. I dont think ill be able to use any controller made of plastic after using this monster. I dont do traditional DJing, only laptop based stuff, so i need to find some creative uses for the jogs and crossfader. Maybe use the crossfader to switch between two groupings of 4 midi tracks (each group being its own track).

i use the lighted buttons to turn off and on different fx racks

the jog wheels cycle through the fx in each rack. i map the pots to the macros, so i control each of the racks with the same knobs.

lots of stuff you can do with the kit. im on the 3d..

So do you use separate FX on each channel ?

Or

FX-sends for each channel ?

If you use FX sends... what do you send the fx-send to ? (master ? or other channels ?)

a combination actually. i don't turn the racks on the sends on/off tho.

on the sends, sends output to 5/6 I use the xones x fader to handle wet/dry
drum tracks route to a track that goes out to 1/2 there are racks here.
sound/instrument tracks route to a track that goes out to 3/4 with racks

the racks on these two tracks to toggle on/off with the ring buttons.

you just can't have too many racks :D

those jog wheels are perfect to map to the chain selector

Hi,
I'm trying to get the Xone 4D working with Ableton and am really struggling. So much so I'm about to ditch the idea of performing with Ableton and sticking with Traktor (something I don't really want to do).

I don't seem to understand how to get a track mapped to a channel on the mixer. In Ableton, everything seems to be running through Channel 1 on the mixer.

The default Midi Mapping for this available on the A&H website is also confusing me. In order to get something on the Y channel of the crossfader I have to cue the track????

Can anyone help me out please?!

Thanks
Toro

Xone:4d and Ableton. Cue channel confusion

Post by pghatak » Sun Feb 15, 2009 4:35 pm

Greetings, to all readers, and my fellow ABLETON LIVE Users.
I'm starting this new topic, to need help, and hopefully someone can help me make this a sticky soon.

So, here is my dilemma.
I bought a new Xone:4D and I'm in the process of doing the MIDI mapping with Ableton LIVE (version 7.12 on my Macbook Pro 17" at this moment)

So far my mappings are as follows :
1. I have 8 tracks, 4 on Deck A and 4 on Deck B. Their faders are mapped to the respective left and right faders on the mixer.

On LIVE, I have my cue on sound card 1/2 and master out on 3/4

And I have other mappings.. but coming straight to the problem point.

HOW do I match my cue to the cue buttons. What i mean is, if my cue is on sound card 1/2, (in LIVE) then ONLY the CUE button on the mixer channel 1 (sc 1/2), works. How do I cue other tracks on my headphones. I'm getting quite confused here.

On the mixer section of the XONE, there are cue button on each channel mixer. So, for this to work, I can only use 4 tracks on ableton live, and each track audio has to output on each Xone sound card.

So, what I mean, is.. I can't say on Ableton, to have Cue on 1/2 and master on 7/8 for example?

Please help.

If im reading right i think im having the same issue.

I normally put my serato on channels 1 and 4 and have live on channels 2 and 3.

At the moment the master just seems to be sending into channel 1 of the 4d...

Is there anyway to change this?

While im here... im trying to map the jogweel to scroll down through my session view. If i change the mode from relative to absolute it does some very different things. In relative mode it scrolls but very slowly, in absolute mode it has no pattern and goes mental.

Any ideas how i can scroll through my whole session just in a few turns?

Thanks :)

I've tried Allen & Heath but they never reply or activate my account

Used Ableton for a few years but now Ive got a Xone 4D mixer its all
gone wrong

I bought a new Xone 4D a couple of months ago but,
can I just? ask if anyone knows how to get Ableton running properly,
my 4D works ace with Traktor scratch pro with coded vinyls, as a
mormal mixer with vinyls,
but with Abe it does not show more than one pair of stereo channels
in prefs (1/2)
3/4 , 5/6 , 7/8 etc don't appear anywhere,
which means no headphone monitoring and no channel faders or uv meters, only references are on the screen ???
Its got the latest drivers, midi mapping and Im on Live5.05
I got this mixer specially for Ableton

I'm on a Mac running OSX 10.4.11

Machine specs are
Mac Pro, Dual Quad Core, 3.2ghz, 3TB internal HDs, 16gb RAM

I've used Ableton for a few years
All other functions I've mapped work (the midi faders, jog wheels, crossfader etc), it's just only one stereo channel shows up, even though there are 20 channels in the mixer soundcard
So I cannot Cue or have any light meters on the mixer

my 4D works ace with Traktor scratch pro with coded vinyls, and all the channels show up

I have the mixer on the preset channel 16 and Ableton Map 2

SORTED , I NEED ( AND NOW HAVE LIVE 8 ) ALL MIXER FUNCTIONS NOW WORK

PLEASE NOTE LIVE INTRO IS GARBAGE, NO COMPLEX WARPING, I'm now using Live 5.2.2 which is super ace !!!!!!!

Because you've told it that cue is sc1/2, which is what its doing

Have audio 1 n 2 going to sc1/2 on mixer (the option just above the volume faders on screen)
3 n 4 to sc3/4 on mixer
and so on
then the cue buttons on 4D will cue and instead of output in Ableton it will come out of the mixer

it is better to have only 4 decks and also it frees up sliders etc for effects

So, how do you use the FX Sends if you utilize all 4 channels on the 4d with 4 decks in Ableton?

If I wanted a FX Return of "reverb" let's say on Send A...

So I create a "Return A", which goes to "FX A", which has a reverb rack on it... then I put all 4 channels "Send A" 100%... how would I hear that FX? There's no way to do it unless I set up 3 tracks and then the 4th one acts as the "FX channel" correct? 7/8 would have to be mapped as the output for the sends?
