agreed. they do light up green, when launched, which is alright, but it should still say that there is a clip 'there'(esp if the group is closed), as the group clip represents any clips in the tracks inside the group. if live has a visual 'clip present' for the group slot, so should the apc.

and another thing... if you assign a clip to a normal (midi/key mapped) key or pad, when you launch that clip the 'crosshair' highlights it, but if you have a device selected in track view, it leaves it in track view. i want the apc to do the same. it does not. it won't even highlight the clip you triggered? it's easy enough to mash the one button, and switch between clips and devices, but if you want to see a clip after triggering with the apc, you must mouse it? meh.

i did notice a slight issue with knobs 2,3,5 in the device section, if i switched between clip and track view using both a key command and the units buttons together. was unable to reproduce, but the lights would all turn completely on for a brief moment. a minor annoyance, nothing major.

and i never got the cool demo light show :(

but enough with the niggles. nice, sturdy unit. looks sharp too. i like the clip launch pads. knobs are good. the faders don't bother me at all, set for pick up, and get used to it. i have a motorized fader with the alphatrack, 9 cheap ones would make WAY too much noise. i'd turn the shit off with all it's zip zappin and clackin. one is more than enough for me. easiest fucking control surface ever to get 'to know', mad stoopid easy. lots of fun to be had, esp if you like to 'play' session view.
this thing has sooo much potential, it will be interesting to see how m4l allows you to customize it.

all in all, excellent job. to work this seamlessly right from the get go??? kudos.

Bittersweet day for me. Akai did a bit of a bungle, and managed to supply the local Ableton/Akai dealer with a grand total of zero units for launch day. Yeah. SF. Big electronic music town. Place that Ableton even did a Live 8/APC40 clinic/demo just a few weeks ago. So despite pre-ordering, and even pre-paying, I'm still waiting a few days longer. Hopefully by Tuesday...

YES ! I got one ! 8)
Tom Cosm posted a thread when he first installs his. And when he powers up his APC 40 there was this cool lighting: snakelike button and pots light up.

My APC 40 shows nothing like this. Does AKAI already changed this ?

Thanx,
Andreas

No way ! That's too hard !

But i figured out the way to get the lightshow. The APC40 must be not connected to the PC. After pluggin the USB cable the "snake" stops and won't show anymore. Too bad ...

Got my APC. It's really cool. I wish though, there was a mapping to a return track. I've been using sends 3 as all other manual mappings.

The APC is really awesome, solid build. I am impressed.

Question for Jesse: Any chance for a "rotary" version in the future? 8 endless encoders instead of 8 faders

if no..

Request: A "rotary" version of APC40. (8 endless encoders instead of 8 faders)

a. many people prefer rotary versions against faders, from the old classic mixer days
b. even more people hate hate hate (i mean really hate) the pickup mode!

Re: APC 40 FAQs, features and questions/clip quantization mappin

Post by dvanscoten » Sun May 31, 2009 9:04 pm

no max and mix levels in the midi pane for clip quantization menu....all we got is hot keys on the cpu.

any ideas on how to assign specific quantizations on the apc 40 (ie: nudge left button= 1 bar, nudge right= 1/4)

you are joking right? secondly pickup would have to be used regardless of pots or faders so your 2nd point is a little irrelivant.

Seems an odd one to me too. Why would I want endless encoders to control volume?? :?
