Question: How do I get the most out of a sampled bass?

I made a bit of a remix of an old track, four to flooring it up a bit.

I was just wondering if there are any hints/tips of how to get the bass sounding more prominent without making it sound muddy.
So far I've shelved off the higher frequencies, monoed (is that verb allowed?) the lower ones and gained it somewhat.
It still sounds hollow though.
I know recreating the bass would be a better solution but I like the character of the original.

Your best bet would be to cut out all the bass frequencies from it so that you only have the sharper character of it left and then layer a synth bass and a sub in underneath.

shelving the high freqs will make the bass less prominent, imo.

I like kraze's layering option. Try to find and keep the character elements, such as keeping the mid/high as mentioned... or maybe even use a compressor with a good attack setting to decrease the volume of everything but that short attack/pluck.
