Wider bass sounds?

Post by huntherwebb » Mon Jul 27, 2009 11:23 pm

I'm relatively new to Live and basically recording in general. I use a tone port UX1 to record guitar, and recently picked up a cheap bass (Rogue Series II LX205B) soley for recording. The bass doesn't seem full at all and almost mono. Any tips?

sup.

i'm not sure how good the UX1 is for recording bass but the input device is really important for bass. spend lots of time on the input sound as its really hard to make a bad bass tone sound good once its recorded.

what kind of bass tone/sound are you looking for?

some effects i would try, if you must, is compression and distortion; both really common bass effects.

Well I was looking for a sound along the lines of Sublime's "Badfish." Would getting another interface be the way to go?

bass should be mono

stereo bass will fuck up the mix in my experience

You could always try stereo touch from voxengo... http://www.voxengo.com/product/stereotouch/ (it is free)

thats a pretty standard finger picking bass tone. try it with your UX1. use your fingers. maybe roll the tone down a bit on your bass. if you can't get a decent sound with the UX1 id suggest a standard DI box.

isn't mono bass more a rule for vinyl cutting?

besides that it eats up space in the mix

unless your playing high notes on bass, towards mid area, the low end will sound slightly distorted if you use chorus, phaser, flanger, or a widener

you could of course try make a copy of your bass part, high-pass it and use some sort of stereo effect on that and combine it with the actual mono bass track to give the impression of "wide bass".
