whats the best sample editor to get?

Wave Editor or Wavelab.

Everyone will have a preference here.

All of the following are great:
Sound Force (my preference)
Cool Edit / Audition
Wavosaur (free)
Wavelab

Try Wavosaur to start with, as it's free (and really good):

If that's not sufficient, try something else.

i've used soundforge for years... great editor
using it less though cos i'm editing directly in ableton

Ableton is the best sample editor, why go and use another when you can crop with the DAW?

Ableton is the shit but this statement is just not true. Ableton doesn't even really have a "sample editor" in it. Get your hands
on a real sample editor and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I think audacity is still free, definitely check it out

I use Audacity as well. Wonderful.

It's kind of annoying that when you cut a piece from an entire song and drag that into sampler or simpler, the whole damn song goes with it. But the start/end points are edited to wherever you made your chops, but you can see the waveform for the entire song. lol. Am I doing something wrong?

just make sure you consolidate(commit) that new region into its own audio file. all this can be done inside abez. thats the beauti of ableton, its non destructive unless you commit your edits.

Wavelab is the default.

Soundforge and almost all the other editors I've tried are pretty clumsy compared to WL. It doesn't work on my CPU for some reason, so I use Acoustica Premium, which is quite similar.

Sound Forge is fine, but you may be able to get by with Audacity. With Sound Forge used to come CD Editor, Noise Reduction, and some decent Izotope mastering plugs (Dx format)

i use audition but mainly because i used cool edit for years

ive heard people rave about acid, but never exactly been told why

I used GoldWave from 97 and then in later years switched to Sound Forge. I use a dedicated audio editting suite because A) it allows your sequencer greater liberty to concentrate on what it does best, and B) the LCD on the S2000 is the size of the side on a matchbox....

I vote Ableton as well. crop -> adjust -> filter -> resample. BAM! everything but MP3.
I hear a lot of familiar titles here, but no explanation of why they are better.
For the good of the order, what is it each can do that can't be done with Ableton, or can be done better/easier than with Ableton?
