First Gig, some tips or trickst? :)

Post by bLumEi » Tue Jan 19, 2010 4:02 pm

Hi Folks,

I'm playing my first gig ever (I'm now 24, quite old for this business :D :D :D ) in about a month.

Do you have any tips or tricks, to what do I have to pay attention?

I'll use following configuration :

-Laptop
-Live 8
-Nov. Launchpad
-Nanopad
-Midi Keyb.
-E-Guitar

How many preperation is sensefull, what should be done live 'on the fly' ?
Do you have "emergency" clips when something is not working ( e.g. : you have problems to get the guitar loop rollin :D )

I mean, I can play my instruments, but I also know that I'm probably getting nervous on my first gig :)

Thanks& cheers !

As someone who's gigged with guitars instead of laptops in the past, a great contingency plan is: bring backups! Power cables, aux cables, USB cables, all that small stuff that you might forget or break down.

It's handy to have a checklist of stuff to bring to gigs as well.

Extra cables are a must! Keep some long ones in your kit.

Also security for your equipment as well. Lockable cases if you are going to be away from your equipment for any length of time.

You never stated if you were MAC or PC, but if you are PC and you use USB MIDI devices, keep this printed out in your gig bag and always have a copy of your device drivers somewhere on your laptop.

Always fire up your gear well in advance so you can iron out any issues before your set.

Practice setting your stuff up in every room in the house. Time yourself. hahahaha

And see if you missed anything :)

THEN TRY IT USING ONLY A FLASHLIGHT.

And to 50 push-ups... yeah

good tip. Also, once I started playing more often, instead of a checklist, what I do is always pack everything the same way, in the same order.

Yeah, definitely a good way to go. Other people I know just don't take stuff out of their gig bag at all, so they know nothing will have gone walkabout.

+1 for the flashlight :) (and people blame me for always buying phones that have a flashlight in.. what if one day i would have lost my flashlight accidentally. try to set up in the dark for once :))
