2step/Garage Patterns...Groove tips?

Trying to get into making more swung, 2steppy beats

Read a great article....http://www.futuregarageforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=98

on the art of making heavily swung beats, but still trying to figure out the best place to place the hihats. The way I like to work is to creat a pattern on the electribe and record the midi hits into Ableton to trigger impulse. I'm trying to wrap my head around what exactly the groove templates are doing to a quantized beat. I don't have any tips or tricks yet for this style and am asking if anyone else has some basic step sequencer patterns.

After listening to alot of garage/2step lately I am feeling the kick on beats 1 and 3 and the snare on 2 and 4. I do not want to swing these beats. I am wanting to swing the beats inbetween. Would it be better to use 1/8 groove or 1/16 groove? Any insight would be awesome.

why cant you import a sampled loop into the groove pool [one your trying to copy] and use that groove on your midi clip. if you press commit you can see what it does to the notes.

If you don't want to swing some parts then just...don't?

Either highlighting the hat notes and applying a groove or separating those midi notes into a new clip and applying a groove to that is the way to do this(the highlighting and applying method is one I'm not really sure about but give it a go).

word, thanks. Will def give these a shot. Extracting a groove is something that will work, but I am wanting to get down to the science of it more and create a groove all my own. What is the difference betwee 1/16 and 1/8 swing? Does 1/8 only swing the 8th notes and 1/16 swing every 16th note? thanks

apply the settings, see what it does

my advice would be to loop some drums you like and then play about till you get it right

although probably not what you are looking for but it did something similar to what you are going on bout http://soundcloud.com/clearthedancefloo ... atease-1-1

Swing won't affect the odd numbered beats, also it will not affect 1/4 notes if it is set as 1/8 or 1/16. Extracting a groove from a two or four bar loop and then dragging that groove into an empty midi slot will allow you to see how the hits and velocities are organised relative to the 1/16 grid. Have you tried slicing up breaks into phrases and triggering these drum and bass style? There's plenty of swungness to be found like that.

thanks oddstep. Thats exactly what I was looking for. Just an explanation of what the settings are programmed to do.

Do you know what the 16/T is doing to what number beats? I can and will just apply the setting and watch, but it is nice to see it explained as well. Thanks.!

Triplets, innit. So swing is moving things relative to a triplets grid rather than whatever the normal one is called.

Hi all, I'm still quite new to producing. And I'm starting to do some garage things. Now I read a lot about setting the swing and or shuffle. Might sound dumb but what does this mean and how do you do this.?
