DJ effects - isolating frequencies - tutorial and free rack

Post by willrjmarshall » Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:12 pm

Hi guys,

I've put together a new flavour of DJ effect in Ableton, which I think is kind of awesome. It got some really feedback over at ALDJ, so I thought I'd share it here as well.

A good description (from http://www.beantownboogiedown.com/journ ... e-can.html) is:
In this video, Will Marshall uses racks in Ableton Live to non-destructively split high and low frequency bands in a project with a concept called phase cancellation. Using a low and high channel in the instrument rack, he assigns a cutoff knob in the macro control to control where each respective band is separated. A separate rack for the highs also utilizes a chain but also includes a utility effect that inverts the low signal, to cancel itself from the high signal so when an affect is applied it chops out the low signal completely (thus, the phase cancellation).

Why set it up like this? This is a great DJ effect for using a filter that is only applied to the higher frequencies, but WITHOUT affecting the bass or kickdrums.

Mostly I've found it useful for fucking up a melody on the fly, while leaving the bass and kick intact. You can also use it to perform effects sweeps, which can sound really good.

The rack is completely transparent unless you process one of the channels, so there's no downside to using it.

I've got a blog post and video explaining the technique up at http://marshall-law.co.nz/2010/01/19/dj ... cellation/

You can download the actual rack from http://marshall-law.co.nz/audio/boywonder/Splitter.adg

If you want to see some examples of how I use effects with this, the Master channel of my DJ Template (http://marshall-law.co.nz/dj-template/) has a few.

Ask any questions you feel like!

I'm getting the error "The preset cannot be loaded. It it probably broken." when I try to load it on Live 8.1.

Download it using a different browser!

This is happening to lots and lots of people at the moment. I think one of the more popular browsers is breaking Ableton files when downloaded, but I am not sure.
