How would they have done the big orchestral type sound in this song? Synth? Sample? record an actual orchestra? Is it possible to get this type of sound from a synth? (sorry im only fairly new)

it would be hard to get it out of a synth, but you don't need to go all the way to recording your own orchestra. A sample player like Kontakt (form NI) has the ability to get that full sound.

You will definitely need an instrument that uses samples.
Ableton have the EIC2 for example. http://www.ableton.com/eic

You could also use East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra or something similar but that's probably a bit more than you need.

Even something as simple as Cakewalk's Studio Instruments Strings can give you quite realistic results. http://www.cakewalk.com/products/studio ... trings.asp
