multiple midi tracks, controlling parameters of one device

Post by yurki » Thu May 20, 2010 10:22 pm

hi there,

I made a vj max4live patch. I used jitter. What I found
really great in using ableton as a host for my vj patch is
the strong interface of ableton. I can use for example
clips to automate parameters of my patch and beat sync it
with tap. I routed the midi of a second midi track to the
first one, thinking, I can use different clips for different
parameters. In this way I can have for each parameter a separate midi
track and have a bunch of clips on this track with different automation
envelopes and different loop lengths.

Using it live, I would have a lot of control this way....

Unfortunately, it doesn't work this way. I can route midi notes
from a track to a track, and also cc data. But not the parameters of a device inside
the receiving track. I tried using the cc's, but it doesn't work right away...
I think I can connect a parameter inside the patch with ctlin, so it receives
cc data. (I just think about it as I right this topic.) But there is one problem with this....
I also want to control the parameters by hand or with a hardware controller. Using
parameter envelopes, it only relatively changes the parameter, which is great. I want
to keep this possibility as well...

I discovered the possibility to unlink the loop
of different parameters inside a clip, so I can have different loop lengths inside one clip. This is almost
what I want, except that I cannot easily start en stop different envelopes for separate parameters
as I would have with a track for each paramter and a clip for each envelope variation.

this story of course not just counts for my vj patch, but for musical purpose as well...

any work arounds/solutions ? thank you!
