Pretty sure it's done with a softsynth in Ableton though..

Its using formant filters. Or He has layered 2 bass sounds on each other and one is using a bandpass filter.

as abletony84 ask me, i wrote him:

"if you mean the high frq bass you can try this in operator with using the default patch then set the waveform to Saw D on the first operator, use a Band SVF Filter, disable operator 3+4 and use 2 for adding some sound with a low level. after that a Bitcrusher & Chorus. play around note C0. That will sounds similar but not identical for me."

now i think to use a flanger instead of chorus will be work better.

sorry im late guys.. haha

yeah wehkah pretty much nailed it. im gonna try it out now. got some comments off some other forums too, dunno if they make much difference though:
Brok landers wrote:it's a sawrtooth through a phaser filter with high feedback/resonance, minimum 6 stages... kontakt can do that, and back in the 90's the emu samplers we're famous for such filters...
however, if you do not need it polyphonic, every six/8 stage phaser could do that.
you could also, with a slightly different color though, do such kind of sounds with a saw through a comb filter... sounds a bit different, but also could give you a satisfying result.

Yeah, wehkah's advice worked very well.
I've found that using Operator's shaper to make it even harsher and turning up the Freq<Vel just slightly makes it more interesting.

Not quite there yet with the phaser, but other than that what y'all think? i get the feeling those rough edges will get smoothened out during mixing as well..

What'd you do? I tried messing around with Chorus and Flanger though but couldn't quite get it right on the first try.

I'm about to try this one out, anyone wanna post their patch so far so I can backwards engineer it? I think that would be the most help, but for now I'm going to try from scratch.

Not that it sounds like the original track anymore (I wasn't going for someting that sounded like the original anyway) but this is what I ended up with.

Move the modwheel and macro 2 and 3 to make it more or less harsh.

You mean the extreme sidechaining on the compressor with the gigantic release time?
It's just creative mis-use of an effect. I like it when people use tools in ways they where never designed for. It almost makes it sound backwards at times.

This Nosaj Thing track sounds like it really IS backwards http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHB3mkDrpkY

the sidechaining yes. it sounds horrible. creative use or not, sidechaining ruined music.
