Just thinking out loud...would wearing polarized sunglasses help?

I'd go see but it's 1am here :)

I played an outdoor gig last week and had the exact same problem... sun was shining directly onto the stage and I basically had to rely on the laptop and knowing where the active clips were and which one was doing what! Bit of a nightmare, really!

and there's the third concert i had to play without seeing anything on the APC...
APC's really just don't work in plain sunlight..
damn, i need to fix this somehow... (i had no sunglasses, so i don't know if that helps)

+ 1 .
Totally unusable in the light. i am considering Re-building another DIY controller with the brightest LEds possible.
MacBook Pro 13" Retina i7 2.8 GHz OS 10.13, L10.0.1, M4L.
iMac 27" Retina i5 3,2 GHz OS 10.11.3 L10.0.1 M4L.

And boy do they make em bright

On the one hand, having it USB powered might be an issue.
On the other, how hard would it be to add a lithium battery that can be recharged over USB?

The kit you signed up for should be a nice example of how easy it'll be to do a DIY project these days. We spent more time waiting for parts than we needed to make it.

For overcoming the problem of not seeing things in daylight, Ive been thinking about a simple matrix of 8 x 8 ultra bright RGB LED's. Though bi-color would be enough.
It doesn't have to have buttons, it would just need to follow the Launchpad/APC/iPad.

I messed around with grids like these: http://www.knutsel.org/wp-content/uploa ... atrix1.jpg
But they aren't bright enough. You need the kind of LED's like they use on Arduinome projects. Which makes me wonder, after the button pads diffuse the light, can you still see stuff in direct sunlight?

there is this :

but expensive, and the leds are already on it. Not sure they are bright enough. No idea how easy it is to make a big matrix, plug it with usb, and having it as a midi surface on the computer. i think it would need for instance a max patch to drive the presses and leds ?

I figured something smaller without buttons could work well alongside a Launchpad.
A MFL patch or a custom script would be needed to make it display the grid.
You can drive presses and LED's from something like the Arduino or teensy. Those chips are powerful enough. Theoretically you can make the new arduino's show up as a MIDI Controller, but haven't gotten any luck or read about it so far. That is where Teensy comes in.

If calculator type screens was used instead, no lights would be needed in sunlight, and in the night, one single led could light up all of the triggers.

I knew about advancements in see through screens and the e-ink stuff. But I haven't seen parts for something like that. Probably not cheap.

I'm sure monome users run same problem with summer festival performances.
@ Chapelier Fou: could you confirm this or not? thank you

I'm straightly using the apc40 with monomulator and Molar vst, so as long as I'm clear and hear my several sequences right, it's a bit annoying but I can handle it.

Maybe you could switch with monome apps [MLR, 7upLive, Molar and so forth].
Just an idea which doesn't resolve anything

Almost all lighted pads have this issue, trying using a Korg EMX-1 in the sunlight, same problem.

Totally confirmed, i used to play on festivals with the monome as a clip trigger. Much better than the LP, though, but still problematic.
