Hi all!

The talking bass, used most famously by Skrillex (though it's been used by numerous artists before and besides him), seems to kind of be a hidden secret of sound design - or at least it's a sound that a lot of people ask for and can't get no matter how hard they try. So I figured I'd provide a little Live Set to show you guys how I make it.

Basically, for the base sound, I just use a combination of Operator (set to a really digital-y sound), Operator's low pass filter (with a high resonance settings), and, perhaps most importantly, some heavy bit reduction (with Live's own Redux) - and the bit reduction is really important, just trying turning it off in the example Live Set.

After setting everything up, the key is just in automating the low pass filter's frequency cutoff. Generally you want to start a note (or phrase) off with the filter pretty open (i.e. the cutoff set up pretty high), then quickly lower it down a bit, then slowly slope it back up to where it started by the end of the note/phrase. Ok, that may have made it seem more complicated than it really is, but you'll see...

So here's the Live Set (note that all of the automation is done in the clip envelopes)-

If you'd like to here how the bass sounds before downloading the Live Set, [shameless plug] you can check out my non-dubstep track at http://soundcloud.com/scutheotaku/rento ... -cries-but (hear it at around 1:06). [/shameless plug]

Oh, and I also included two premade drum loops in the Live Set, just to give an idea of how it would sound with drums. I got them in the free Dubstep pack at SampleRadar.com - so check that out if you like using premade loops (which I usually don't, but whatever) or want some nice single hits (they've also got packs for a ton of other genres, with a running total of somewhere around 30,000 free samples last I checked).

Peace!

Ben

PS: Special thanks to Dom Kane's old wobble bass example Live Set for giving me ideas!

That's a good sound. It's similar in concept to something from this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdeTc2chwZw

I just skimmed through his video but yeah it's pretty much the same idea, though I think mine is grittier and his is more bassy.

Of course you can use any LFO for automating this stuff but this Max patch has a step sequenced LFO which is great for wobble bass:

Yeah, though for this particular rack it's actually much better to just paint in the automation with clip envelopes.
