Great news man, I REALLY enjoyed your talk when you came to Decibel Festival in Seattle a couple years ago. I'll definitely be passing this on.

what i took away from this , more than anything, were his comments about the relative (un)importance of daw, synths used, deep mastering skills and all that....case in point being Burial, who did such amazing work with little or no real sequencer knowledge

not saying this as a lilB style copout to learning continually as much as possible in a technical sense, but making sure that it does not override groove, and arrangement and feeling in the pursuit of good music...

so i got a new tat on my neck:

#1 arrangement

#2 workflow

ill.gates wins at life.
best money i've spent was one of his workshops years ago. been spreading this around.
music is a philosophy, not a technique. hard to teach that.

he does have some nice things to say. found it a little weird that he recommends only 20 hours for a track. this may apply to some music, but not sure about every style. but he doesnt say every style so i can only assume he means his style.

I think the main point is that if you aren't nearly done by that amount of time then it may be more likely that you're just wasting time trying to polish a turd. Not to say you won't get a banger out of weeks of work, but in a less case scenario.

for me the 20hr comment was one of the more helpful

def not watching the clock, but i take it as a heads-up to recognize

when a track is on the road to nowhere...

One big thing I learned from Live is to not get attached to a certain thing you made and try to fit it and other things around to make it work. It's more freeing when you're not telling yourself "I made this in this way so it has to stay like that because I spent x amount of time and effort."
