How to name a nameless „USB Audio Device“ in Windows XP

Post by $4mU3l » Mon Feb 20, 2012 11:23 am

Cheesed of more and more class compliant devices which appear as "USB Audio Device(X)" in XP? Name them! Especially when it comes to routing it will ease the whole procedure a lot (http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=134154).

1. Make a copy of the „wdma_usb.inf“ found in “C:\Windows\inf” and store it elsewhere.

2. Edit the copy of the „wdma_usb.inf“ and search for the section where it says USB\CLASS_01.DeviceDesc="USB Audio Device".

3. Rename "USB Audio Device" with the proper name of your hardware device e.g. “Slim Phatty” (I also edited some other entries here but this is only cosmetically and not necessary).

4. Install the driver via the edited „wdma_usb.inf“ as described. (Use the advanced mode only in cases if Windows want to install a “USB Audio Device”. In cases where a device need other drivers too choose the recommended i.e. automatic mode, but only for those drivers!).

5. Don't search. I will choose...

6. Have Disk...

7. Point the wizard to the edited „wdma_usb.inf“...

8. Next...

9. Now the formerly nameless “USB Audio Device” should appear with a specifiable name in the “Device Manager” as well as in your DAW e.g. Ableton Live.

I must try this out. If it works, you sir, are a genius!

EDIT: This works perfect. For each device I created a separate INI file with the details of mu controller. I then unplugged every controller except 1. I chose to upgrade the USB audio driver, browsed for the INI and it set the name. I then plugged in the next and repeat.

Quite easy. Thanks Heaps.

Has anyone got any ideas how to get this to work on Windows 8? Specifically, 8.1 Pro.

I tried as above, but when installing the modified driver, it throws an error and states it could not find the specified file.

Edit: Some further attempts yielded nothing, so I had one last go at finding some useful info on this here World Wide Web and came across this: http://www.eightforums.com/customizatio ... nager.html

I'm going to try it tomorrow... Wish me luck!

Well, it kind of worked and did what it said on the tin, but isn't much good for MIDI software use, as only Device Manager reports the new custom name. MIDI software still display the generic Windows "USB Midi Controlller" name. :(
