Automation tribulation - how do I get it into session view??

Hi - fairly new live user here would appreciate help with what I hope is a simple question for you more seasoned users........

I can record live automation from my midi controller - OK - the automation shows up in arrange window - how do I record directly into the clip envelope in session view / transfer that automation data into session view - I don't want to draw it in with my mouse if possible - I prefer my knobs and sliders...

I ran into this problem last night and did some digging in the forums, apparently it seems that the only way to get automation into the clips is to drag it from arrange, or copy and paste it in from arrange to session...

someone correct me if i've missed something (which i hope i have!!)
