Can you actually "play" live like this? Or is this "fake"

Post by scotchtape800 » Wed Apr 11, 2012 5:08 pm

Just wondering if doing something like this is possible or if everything in the video is basically pre-recorded?
I'm kind of a noob at Ableton (only been doing basic recordings and loops) and I don't know where to learn this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62piHzob ... r_embedded

Specific questions I have:
- For the loops, are they being recorded as audio or midi?
- For the start and end points of the loop, is he controlling those or do the clips just default to 4/4?
- How the do you do all of that if you need to play something with two hands? (how do you select which clip to record then start and end it if you need two hands on the keys?!)
- Can you play a midi clip AND play the vst at the same time? I've tried but I can't...

Any help from the "pros" welcome! Just trying to learn!

My guess is midi

Global quantize is probably set to one bar

use a footswitch. but live starts recording on the next bar, so you should have enough time with your hands
- Can you play a midi clip AND play the vst at the same time? I've tried but I can't...
turn "OVR" off

^^^
Yup, entirely possible. Not right out of the box of course, it's going to take some time to learn Live and get comfortable enough with your controller, but its certainly do-able.

When I turn OVR off - my playing cuts off whatever the clip is playing :(

Looking into it more, seems like there is no easy way of navigating through clips and tracks out of the box :(
WHY ABLETON! It seems really hard to get the looping working with midi clips the same way you can do it with audio clips (use a bus to multiple tracks with record enabled) :(

All the different camera angles give the game away.

Sorry for noobness but can you explain more?
I only see that there are some clips pre loaded, but that doesn't account for the "live" recording and looping going on.

Every time it cuts from an over the shoulder shot to the front view there is clearly nobody with a camera standing where the previous shot was taken from. Therefore it was done in several takes and the video spliced together to fit a pre recorded sound track.

. Maybe the original was performed live but you can't really tell from the video.

But in principle that sort of thing could definitely be achieved live, with enough preraration.

Absolutely yes performances like that can be achieved.
Here is a video showing the similar principal, without all the flash. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J6lVQzVte0
In this video the user is performing on an
Akai MPKmini which is not as complex as the remote SL25mk2, I guess what I'm getting at is when it come to Ableton you are only limited by your gear and imagination.
