I just tried this and it deleted my clips. What am I doing wrong? Has this functionality been changed?

Re: Erase selected automation in arrangement view.
This can happen when the automation and the clip are filling the same space. For example, not an issue if the clip is really long and the automation only covers a few bars.
Here's what to do in your case.
At the far end of each track in Arrangement view, you will see a small plus icon. With the automation you're interested in displaying in the track's drop down boxes, click that plus sign and it will open a view below the track that contains just the automation. Highlighting the automation in this view will allow you to delete it without affecting the underlying clips.
If you have more than one automation track, you can can use this method to display several automation tracks at once, for example, if you are trying to synchronize the movement of your automations.
It's also a convenient way to copy automation from one track to another.

Oh, and the individual automation lanes can be collapsed again by clicking the up arrow icon at the end of each automation track.
