How Would You Export A Project Structure As Text?

Post by ctrl.z.jones » Tue Jan 07, 2014 11:42 am

okay, so I have been a good boy and got my project organised.

All the clips in my set are properly named, and now I would love to export this in information as a text file or in an other format that allows my to look at it off screen.

It would be ideal to export/print the browser with all the contents of the subfolders structure for the project ...

Or I could think of an Excel Sheet that reflects the project structure and that I can print. Some thing like:

Track1:Drum Track2:Guitar Track3:Bass
Beat1 Lick1 Line1
Beat2 Lick2 Line2
Fill1 Lick3 Line3
Fill2 Lick4 Line4

Is this DoAble?
And HowTo?

Just curious, why do you want to look at it off screen?

just because.

It is a project with *a lot of* clips and I'd love to see all at once, printed out, pinned on my wall.

I really wonder that this has not come up in all the years of Lives history.

screenshots don't help.

as for the log file:
I understand that it is to be in ~user/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live 9.0.6,
named as 'Log.txt'
so how could I find the track/clip for my project
I don't see any name of any clip in this text file …
I seems to reflect all the processes that Live has been doing in the specific sessions,
but does not give a structure of the project …

so: could you elaborate on this?

I still don't undestand the purpose.

Is it to help you plan stuff? Is it because your sets are so complicated that you need to see them on paper? How would that help?

it is because the project is larger than the screen
and I suffer from a goldfish memory span [~3sec]

so I really ask for a solution here.
can the 'session view' be exported as xml, text or anything digestible?

if this is not possible: okay, then be it.
just say it.
I'll write it down with a pencil on my cards. no problem.

but all the asking about why I want to do something is making me feel even more stupid, staring at f a DAW in 2014 that cannot do the most basic thing, that is: export information on a basic level, that is: text.

well... i'm not sure how exporting all the details of a set that won't even fit on a screen would be simple - session view at that. also, it's not like the DAW was invented to simplify audio recording at a text level, more like to squeeze a lot of hardware into one place.

why don't you shoot support an email? support@ableton.com

Sorry to hear that. We're just trying to help. Sometimes people go in the wrong direction, and it's always best to know what's the final goal to find the best way to achieve it.

@H20nly:

so how do I unwrap the secrets of the .log file to get the session_view infos into a text format?
I cannot find any clip_details in that file …
at least not searching for the name of the clips in that file.
What do I have to look for?

that's a better question for Ableton support than me.

my comment to that effect was speaking to the notion that the log is the only text file that Ableton Live outputs.

change the the extension of your project file from .als to .zip and unzip the .xml (the file in it has no extension but it's .xml) from it, if u give it to .als extension AL able to open it, should write some RegEx based thing/excel macro whatever, which can work with it (convert it to your prefered format in/out)

Following on from what xbitz wrote: If you know Ruby, check this out.

This will output track names from the set, but you can tweak it to output clipnames. Give me a PM if you need a hand, I'd be happy to help.
