[SOLVED] Clip Count In for Session View?
[SOLVED] Clip Count In for Session View?
So I'm trying out Ableton Live 9. I'm very happy with what ableton can do; however, I keep running into one (potentially deal breaking) problem. I use the session view and I need some kind of indicator of when the clip recording is going to start.
It looks like the only usable solution is to use a foot pedal with global quantize set to "1 bar". If I set it to anything else, I can't make sense of what's happening. For example, if I set global quantize to 8 bars, then watch the bar counter at the top of ableton, it starts recording after 4 bars?!? If I set GQ to 4 bars, then it just start recording immediately (on the next downbeat). I'm a pretty smart person, but I have yet to make sense of this. The other problem with the 8 eight bar quantize value is that it forces me to record an eight bar loop for the price of having more than a partial bar before recording starts.
I'd really like to have more that a partial bar to get ready to lay down the next clip. It's just too tight, but I don't see any way around it? The real issue seems to be that countdown is available when coming in from a full stop, but not when clips are running.
It would be great if there was a "master countdown to record" pie graph that references whatever clip is armed and about to record.

Re: Clip Count In for Session View?
go to preferences then go to record/warp/launch. there, you can set a count in for 1, 2 or 4 bars. it does a little countdown, and shows it in the arrangement position display up at the top. it does it in both arrangement and session view.

yeah, they don't seem to have a good option for punching in.
Re: Clip Count In for Session View?
It'd be nice if there was a max4live device which counted bars so you could know how far into an 8 bar interval Live's transport was running at.
So if it showed 5, you would know that there were two (and a partial) bars counting in before it'd start recording.
It does help though to keep your clips and launching extremely organized if you work in 4 bar quantization, always make sure that every idea is within a 4 bar context. If you have something working at a 2 bar interval, it could through off your assumptions and you might begin recording two bars too early or too late.

Re: Clip Count In for Session View?
My solution to this is to create an 8 bar clip that runs all the time (with global quantization set to 8 bars). That way I can at least watch the pie graph on that track and see where I am at any given moment within the 8 bars.
My next step is to make a feature request for a large (i.e., easily visible) GQ pie chart somewhere in the session view UI.

That's pretty clever! Nice technique. I'll keep it in mind incase I do some similar things.
