How to do a CLEAN, TIDY update?

Post by badkop » Wed Sep 10, 2014 12:35 am

Hi all

I am sheepish asking this but: as a long time Mac-based Ableton user, I've found that updating to a new release has left me with old versions littering my hard drive, clip libraries spread around the place and a general mess. I've never been clear on how to just replace my old live with the new release.

I've just bought a new macbook pro with 16GB RAM so I'd like to instal 64-bit Live and take advantage of it, but could anyone advise on how to do it RIGHT? So that I don't have half an old version with my libraries etc and a new one?

Thanks in advance...

well the good news is, unless you're actually running out of ram, there isn't any huge advantage to using 64 bit Live, so take whatever advice these people give you, and save it until the day you get an out-of-memory (ram, not cpu) message and need to upgrade.

Disagree, if all your plug ins are 64bit compatible, there no reason not to run it. But either will be fine in the end for the majority of people.

Do you need anything from your live 8 library? If not, then simply redo loading the latest version from Ableton and all the packs you own is all you need to do on the new computer.

What about if some of your plugins are not 64bit compatible? Im using 64bit Live 9 and after installing some plugins (e.g Gforce minimonsta-latest ver) they are not listed or shown in browser at all.

Then you have to use 32bit.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I probably need to do some proper file management then reinstall all the libraries as you say. Save my own presets and sample etc somewhere safe.

Re. the RAM issue, perhaps you can advise: on my old mac I was finding things running slower and slower on all sessions plus thing taking AGES to load up, with the CPU meter at the top right still looking ok. I concluded this meant I was struggling with RAM. Is that a hasty conclusion?

I'm still getting to grips with the new macbook.....

That's probably just CPU power, I don't think it has much to do with RAM in this case.

Even if the cpu meter is sitting at 40% or similar?

Sorry I misunderstood you. It could be a ram issue, hard to say for sure. Are you using mp3s?
