20 Workflow Tips in Live 9

Post by aporia » Tue Oct 21, 2014 6:57 am

Hi forum!

I took some of my favorite (less obvious) tips and tricks in Live 9 and compiled them in a tutorial-style video. I wanted to share it with this community:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ebZ6xizRTk

It's pretty light on the explanatory stuff, but I think it should still be easy to follow.

Here's the list of tips, in case you want to skip ahead when watching:

1. unlinked clip envelopes for synthesis.
2. putting 3 identical LFOs in one rack and then slightly offsetting them
3. chopping before duplicating
4. deactivate all resampled channels; bring in clips to write sequences
5. default audio track on 'resampling'
6. instrument racks + chain selector for morphing synths
7. sidechain as external input for envelope follower
8. OS level macros for repetitive keyboard presses
9. playback scrubber with a muted clip to find cool parts of a clip
10. warping with the BPM slider
11. perfect high/low split (using phase cancelation)
12. empty midi track for organization
13. audio buffer rate and CPU resources
14. cleaning up session clips
15. using folders named '--------' as dividers
16. audio follow
17. recording against a loop forever
18. using a muted chopping block track that you can solo to find parts
19. duplicating effects in a row
20. slice to midi + randomizer + short midi clips + skrillex (or whatever)

if you like it/hate it ... let me know! thanks for watching!

OK, you've just expanded my bag of tricks by a good percentage. Fabulous! And thank you very much!

yay. thanks guys. Glad you found this useful.

LMK if the video is unclear or anything; I'm happy to explain further.

I've learned a TON from tutorial videos over the years and wanted to share back!

Hey, this is great and I've made it up to 7 before I had to turn it off and open Live. He chain selecting had me goofing off for a bit. Great inspiration :)

I really appreciate that people are making videos like these.

One little thing. I don't know if it'd almost be better to create individual small videos of all the tips and then do a playlist. 27 min is a bit intimidating.

But I mean, you must be doing smethjng right if I am watching it still :P

Point well taken.

I added a table of contents to the youtube description, so its a bit easier to skip around. I believe this actually makes this a more valuable asset since you can easily refer back to something you remembered seeing.

Of course, the whole point of the exercise (at least for me) was to put a whole bunch of weird stuff, but useful stuff in one place... since I don't see a ton of videos like that out there.

And I'm really glad you're watching.

That high low splitter is interesting. I need to see whether I can build it.

To tip 17 I will add:

When jamming for ever in session mode while an arrange mode loop is playing, do the following

- Create a whole bunch (8 or 16, or more) of blank midi clips, 8 or 16 bars long (however long your loop in the arrangement is)
- Set follow actions so that they trigger in sequence
- Store them in your user library
- When needed for a jam session, draf them into the track in session mode.

This way you can record into them in overdub mode and your jam session will come out sliced into convenient 16 bar sections.

When recorded, for added interest
- freeze & flatten these,
- select the lot
- follow action 'any', in legato mode, with a relatively short times.

I use this rack ALL THE TIME

so they key to this trick (which I could have explained better in my video) is a rack for the lows (with an eq, like you normally would use) and then the highs rack is itself a rack with 2 chains:

1 EQ with the same settings as before
AND (in other chain)
1 utility with left and right invert turned on.

When Live sums the lows with an inverted clean signal, what happens is that all the low end (in the 'highs' rack) is canceled out and you're left with just the highs... on the top level rack, if you assign the same knob to the frequency of the EQ in both the low and high chain, you can use this to move the crossover point around and maintain the perfect high/low split.

perhaps you already got this from my video, but I thought I would offer some additional context.

cheers mate!

I am trying it, but it is not transparent. There is a definite flanging effect when I sweep through the frequencies...

Yeah, re: that non-transparent flanging I think you're supposed to "set-and-forget" the crossover and then build on the discrete high | low chains. So, modulation and reverbs on the highs, corpus sub-bass on the lows, etc.

make sure you have the crossover point mapped to both EQ's and make sure the range for the macro is the SAME.

Also make sure your EQ's are flat and there are no resonant bumps.

If you need more than that, I got the idea from Mr Bill (who is a complete genius) and he did a more in-depth tutorial on the same concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOJr_QjjFQA

I find having the Q really low (much lower than you have it set in your example) makes a difference.
But thanks, I will watch the Mr Bill tutorial.
