Best workflow to split individual Drim Tracks into ext Outs?

Post by chapelier fou » Sun Feb 05, 2017 2:01 pm

My drum parts are made of Drum Racks.
Starting from the original livesets (all in stereo) i now want to separate Kicks and Snares from the rest of the elements and send them to their own individual mono outputs.
Since we are not allowed, inside a Drum Rack, to select individual outputs, here's the best workflow i found :

- create a new audio track
- set monitor to IN
- select my kick as a source, Post FX
- note the volume level in the original track
- report it to the new one.

Any better way ?

EDIT :
As i am writing this, i realize that there is an "extract chain" option when i right-click on the track's header. That seem to be the best solution, isn't it ?

... you're also losing the rack sends and any automation you may have recorded to them.

And now you know why...

You simply can not route straight to an external output and keep processing them like they were on the same bus at the same time.

That's because IMHO you're thinking about this backwards as if the typical drum rack is everything you can ask for. A drum rack track is just a housing track for different devices to me. If you want to go out of this do it all the way, no half measures.
  • Extract everything and use External Instrument to send MIDI to the drum rack from clips in this track and receive audio as well. Alternatively set this extracted track to In or Auto and keep the drum rack as the source for MIDI events. I usually only run automation here.
  • Route all tracks receiving audio to a drum buss. You can stop mid-way if you want, but it's preferable to route to the drum buss also from the drum rack output. I do this when I need the main outputs from a VST Instrument in my drum rack.
  • Move all audio effects from the drum rack track to this drum buss.
  • Move any effects inside the drum rack to their own returns. Now you can share these returns with other instruments, which is more natural.
  • Put this set up in your template and only change the sources.
I started doing this some years ago and instantly I could everything I wanted. I never looked back since.

Sometimes extraction doesn't work as expected and you need to do the same thing manually. Some VSTis aren't fully compatible with External Instrument, but most are.

I'm in this process myself. At the moment mostly about playing lines by hand as well as using all kinds of sequencers to get what I want. Looking for solutions and implementing habits of using what you find do take time.

Yep, that's what i figured out while writing the firs post. It has some side effects but it's mainly OK.
