I successfully updated the firmware in the MCU to 4.0.3, using the download .mid from Mackie. The idea is that one brings that file in to the midi player. It is known not to work in Ableton Live, however. So I downloaded the free Midi-Ox and installed it to the MCU from there. I had version 126.96.36.1992.
You do not use Sysex. What you do is click on Actions / Play MIDI. That gives you a little file player known as MIDIBar MCI. In this player, use the File Folder symbol (third one from the left). Select your firmware update file for the MCU. Mine was called MCUv4.0.3.mid.
Next, click on the midi plug symbol, second from the left. Mine offered a number of choices based on the midi instruments I had attached. I selected MCU Pro USB v3.1. I then reset the MCU holding down the buttons described in their firmware update instructions. And then I hit the Play button in the MIDIBar.
That update worked great.
