[Request] Tips for using ableton to replace a hardware DJ mixer?

Post by Eastoftherivernile » Sat Apr 27, 2019 7:35 pm

Hi All,

I am thinking about whether I could use Ableton as a DJ mixer with a pair of vinyl turntables. My thought is to route the output from my turntables (via vinyl preamps) into two stereo audio channels. I would then do all the things a mixer would normally do (e.g. EQ, trim levels, crossfade etc.) in the box in Ableton. This would have the added benefit of allowing me to use Ableton's effects and some VSTs I have to mix things up a little. I am thinking I would use a second output as my headphones monitor to cue tracks etc.

Funny thing is that I can't find any tutorials or anything for this. Makes me wonder if there is a good reason why others haven't done it yet!?

Am I barking up the wrong tree here?

P.s. The reason I haven't just got on with it and tried it out is that it would require me to upgrade my soundcard to support at least 4 in 4 out and I'm not going to spring for that if it fundamentally isn't possible!

Live has a internal crossfader, and you can select and route multiple inputs/outputs from a 4x4 soundcard just fine.r:

I did something kind of similar where I routed Traktor through Ableton. I used 3 decks from Traktor and Ableton as my "mixer". I would definitely recommend it as you have so much more control over effects if that's what you're after.
