Setting up HALion in Ableton (multitimbral setup)

Post by chrisfreeq » Sat Jul 27, 2019 8:59 am

Hi.

So I've just acquired Ableton for a specific assignment, and I'm struggling to setup HALion in it.
In Cubase, it's straight forward, because you activate the additional audio outputs on the instrument track itself.
However, I find no way to do this in Ableton. It seems the outputs are there (they're available in the Ableton mixer to route to an audio track, but HALion doesn't seem to agree because inside HALion, the additional outputs appear unavailable.

What I've done:
1- Add HALion instrument.
2- Add additional MIDI tracks.
3- Inserted External Instrument onto the MIDI tracks, and routed MIDI and Audio to HALion.

I've Also tried:
1- Add HALion instrument
2- Add MIDI tracks and route to HALion.
3- Add Audio tracks and set input to HALion outputs.

Anyone been successful in doing a HALion multitimbral setup in Ableton?

Cheers.

I used halion for a very short period of time. So maybe I'm talking crap. But try using it as a VST in your plugins. Works for me with Komplete and all native instruments. So I think it should work the same way
DAW: Ableton 10 standrad latest version
SYSTEM: win 10 64bit running on SSD
COMPUTER: Asus zenbook UX430UQ
Audio interface: steinberg UR22MKII
CPU: i7-7500U
RAM: 16GB
GPU: GeForce 940MX

I'm not sure what you mean by that?
It is a VSTi, and that's how I'm using it; as a VSTi.

I've been able to setup Kontakt as multitimbral, using the "External Instrument" plugin on MIDI tracks and routing them there.
But this doesn't seem to work with HALion.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey man I sort of figured it out, as I came across a post somewhere teaching me that Ableton was very late with adding VST3 support (apparently no until version 10.1.x).
So I figured I'd try with HALion VST2, and it does indeed support multi-out!! Try it with the External Instrument plugin :-)

Peace,
Chris

1 Insert MIDI track and load Halion
2 Open Halion, load an instrument in the first available slot
3 Insert a empty MIDI track
4 In the track, locate the `MIDI To` dropdown menu, and set its value to the track where you loaded Halion (it has halion in the name)
5 Another dropdown menu will appear below, select the track number that matches the slot you loaded an instrument in halion (step 2)

Repeat steps 2-5 for as much tracks you want. Hope this helps!
