Wavetables in Ableton's... Operator? Script to convert and use wavetables and some Operator AMS files

Post by Bart Wronski » Wed Jan 06, 2021 5:15 am

Hi, this is my first post and I wanted to share a "trick" (plus a script and some example but useful AMS files) to make my favorite soft synth - Operator - even better for creative fun.

Probably many of you know it already, but in Ableton's Operator you can not only "draw" desirable oscillator harmonics.
What less people realize (I learned only a few days ago) is that also can also load them from AMS files. Going further, you can generate those descriptions using software, for example from... other synthesizer wavetables.
This means that you can take any arbitrary wavetable and use it (minus the phase differences between the original and AMS) as your Operator oscillator!

To do it, I coded up a small project / script to convert wavetables in wav format to additive harmonics description used by Operator's oscillators.
I also ended up writing a blog post on the whole process, why and how it works, and discussing limitations: https://bartwronski.com/2021/01/05/conv ... ams-waves/

The project and wavetables converted from NI Massive wavetables from some wavetable pack I found a while ago online is here: https://github.com/bartwronski/AbletonO ... Wavetables

Important note: I don't know the legal "status" of the original wavetables, and I don't post them neither in my blog, nor on github; only a text description of their harmonics in the AMS format (used by Operator).
I hope this is fine according to all the rules here (and apologies if it doesn't).

Comments are welcome, and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I had fun with it as a small side exploration and project!
