both midi and audio to get to a vst effect

Post by baseinstinct » Sat Apr 03, 2021 11:02 pm

Surfer2 equaliser can be receiving midi signal for tuning the eq response. When I add it to a midi track, it starts to responding to midi signals if the track is armed. Ideally, adding an instrument before it now should let it still be getting midi, but it seems ableton does not work that way.

As a result to have both an instrument and the effect get the midi, I think I would need to keep them on a separate tracks?

I wonder if you know of a need workaround.

The issue is that when you’re sending notes, you’d have two devices responding simultaneously... and in many cases that would be the unintended result.

If you need to send midi to a plugin that is an audio effect, you can create a new empty midi channel and then route the output of that channel to the channel with the plugin in it. Then a dropdown below that will give you options for which midi input you’d like to send to, in this case the plugin should show up as one of the options.
