Some vsts (RMIV for example) will not reliably render or freeze properly in live. This is not a fault of ableton directly, but is to do with the fact that the VST glitches when rendering out of realtime which is, as i understand what happens with a freeze.
The workaround is actually a better and safer way to render VST's imho.
Add as many audio tracks as you have VST outs (you can have up to 7 for a single RMIV) to a max of about 5 tracks (how many you can do depends on your PC i think - i can do up to 8 that i've tried so far). Route the first 5 VST tracks to these tracks and arm them all. I recommend labelling the new tracks so the filename will be right.
Repeat the process until all of your VSTs are long single wave files.
Unless you need the processor power, it is best to render the vsts without any post vst effects as you can copy these to the new audio track and still manipulate the audio after the render.
