How to modelling an acoustic space using tools from Ableton ?

Post by GDubigny » Sat Oct 01, 2022 8:43 am

Hi,

I was read this article from Synth secrets and I said to myself that I could reproduce this diagram with the tools proposed by Ableton :

Here I have two questions :
- Do you know to what I can map the LFO ? It seems to be on the frequency of oscillator, filter but I don't understand the goal of this tool.
- For the 3 BDD, I creat a three chains of delay with different values of delay, this is right ?
- For contour generators. I think there is no tools from Ableton that I can use in this exercise. I am right ?

Thank you for your help !

The LFO is probably modulating:
- the oscillator's pitch
- the filter's frequency
- the output volume (amplitude modulation)

"Contour generator" are ADSR envelopes. You can use M4L's Envelope Midi device.

It's important to remember that while those synth secrets articles are good , they are also over 20 years old.
A lot of the info relates to synths of the time
The BBD blocks are bucket brigade delays, because they refer to what was possible on a vintage modular system. This is all pre eurorack. and you can see the limits of what a synth available at the time could offer users. 3 stereo BBDs was a big ask of a synth in 2000. Most of the SS articles refer to using a Nord Modular, which was the best of the best back then.

These days we have software convolution space emulations. We can alternatively have a rack of 80 digital delays if we like to use discrete delays as proxies for reverberant reflections . But as far as room/space emulations go - the SS articles are way way way out of date. We can do things much better now.

Very well, thank you for your clarification. Where can I find the equivalent for today? Or articles/books/videos that explain the synthesis in depth?

If you don't know the basics of synthesis, then check this Ableton made Learning Synths website.
For more advanced topic... Google is your friend
