Getting the most from a MIDI Controller

A couple of questions:

what's the benefit of using a keyboard controller? (the keys, not knobs)
In what ways would you use a keyboard with live?

in a recent gig which we were gonna do with 2 copies of live but couldnt cos of syncing problems i ended up with a keyboard all mapped to drum clips in live so my mate was triggering all the bass and melodies and i was triggering drums and fx - it was a very liberating way of working - mice suck.

i usually have a few keys mapped with on and offs for fx as well.

Also you don't necesseraly have to trigger loops, it can be one shots like a snare drum that you can play in rhythm. You gotta to have a low latency card though.

At gigs I do, I assign keys of my keyboard to the on/off switch of effects, for example the auto filter. If you have a synthline which you're filtering live, you can easily turn off the filter at the climax and start the unfiltered synthline when the beats come in. And when there's a break you can easily turn on the filter again (while you turned your knobs to the begin-position). It works..
