predetermining length in loop recording?

Post by nosuch » Fri Apr 25, 2003 11:16 am

I there any way to predetermine the length of a recording in the session view?
For example I would like to record 2 bar guitar loops. I need both hands to play the guitar. so it would be handy to predetermine the length of my recording to two bars. Would be cool for solo shows and convenient in a recording situation - as I would not have to set the loop markers later.
Could'n't figure out if I can do this (and how) in the manual.

Yes, I own an official copy of live (to all you rogues out there ;-)

One indesipensible tool for performance (and just pratice) with Live and a guitar is a midi foot controller--the Behringer FCB 1010 is a great deal, and works very well with Live. This leaves your hand free to do whatever you want. To predetermine a length of a clip that you will record, go to options>preferences>default>clip>quantization>set it to the appropriate number of bars. This is a global setting, so all clips will only be of the length you determine here. I prefer to acutally set the clip quantization to "global", then I can make any clip as long or short as I want via the midi foot controller. This clip quantization is different than the control panel quantization, which is more about how long after you hit the record button in a clip slot it takes to start recording. I always set this to "bar", so I can hit the midi pedal at any point during the measure before I start to record, and it will start recording at the beginning of the next measure.

Good Luck,

Ryan

I will try the trick with the quantization.
Thank you.

If you already have a beat going the methods above are fine. But if you intend to start a session by recording a guitar loop, it's a little more complicated. But with a midi foot controller you can fix this scenario as well. Just assign a stepping pedal to Live's "tap tempo" function. Then simply tap your foot on the controller while playing the guitar riff and then step the button assigned to the clip slot (if it's empty this will start recording audio into the slot).

Good luck :-)

or if you don't want a click track or pre-determined tempo, just turn off all quantization---then the recording will stop and start the instant you press the button/pedal/whatever to trigger the clip....

YEP it is possible IF via some Max for Live devices to set this per track OR individually for certain clip slots. All info here:

P.S. it is now possible to set a "Fixed Recording Length" for clips via a PUSH but this means you would need a PUSH + this can be set globally only
