Using Ableton Live :: Mixing Audio and Visual

Post by azart » Fri Apr 28, 2006 9:31 pm

I would like to see how many of use combine the use of Ableton Live with other VJ sofware! All controlled from common midi controllers! etc...

I am currentlly using Live with arkaos, novation sl 25, edirol v4, xsession, trigger finger and korg kaoss pad entrancer! It is still the beginning and a new way of working. You get that strange feeling when ending up mixing sound to image, then image to sound! Really cool! especially in live mixes.

Links to sample mixes? Mine coming out very soon :)

What are you using? How do you work? Interested in talking about this?

Peace

Live is great for sequencing and controlling audio and video. I do my lighting (lasers, scanners, washes, floods, strobes, blinders) and remote pan/tilt/zoom cameras with Live, too. Having audio, video, and lighting all choreographed and working together is really effective.

Once you start using the IAC driver, Live clips, follow actions, automating and beatmatching Arkaos' CC curves and MIDI clips, you can do some incredible stuff.

Welcome!

MIDI>DMX interface. Basically converts note-ons or CC data into DMX.

Yep.

The converter translates 0-127 MIDI CC into 0-255 DMX, so one bit of resolution is lost. It doesn't really make any difference, unless you're doing super-slow pans/tilts/fades/etc.

cool cool, I just have one more question, could you think of anything that would allow someone like me, with just simple lighting, to do simple midi controlled tasks (flash on note on, etc.).

I think your lights would have to be DMX controllable, and you'd need a MIDI>DMX converter.

I use this one: http://www.jpleisure.co.uk/item117.htm.

Ignore the crap website and photo! I've been using this thing for over 5 years without a problem.

Hope that helps!

I've just started setting up a Live > Modul8 type thing, and we (there are two of us) plan to use two laptops to go back to back with both music and visuals, as we already do with Audio, using two MacBook Pros and bags of RAM. Waiting for the UB version of Modul8 though.

showmagic and arkaos/resolume? any recommendations?

Post by glenwood » Wed May 03, 2006 10:09 am

hi! thanks for everyones comments/tips on this post, i'm new to ableton, still trying to figure out the audio side of things, but i'm ultimately hoping to move our dmx light show over to ableton and add a projector running vj software as well, so its all synched via midi

I was considering showmagic for the dmx side of things, and maybe arkaos or resolume for the vj stuff. anyone got any comments advice on this choice? what are other people using for dmx comtrol?
