It seems like this happens in some of the videos on Ableton's site but I can't figure out how to do it in Live. I've been all over the manual and help files but can't find it.
I want to set it to stop recording after a certain number of bars. Is this possible?

Yes. In the session view you do it by using the global quantize setting. Set it for 4 bars for example. Clips will now start and stop on even 4 bar increments (note: not 4 bars from when you press play, but on a 4 bar grid)
In Arrange, you have punch in/out markers

Thanks. So there's no way to have it stop recording automatically after 4 bars?

Yes. All you have to do is
hit the clip button or a clip stop button in another slot (or the main stop button for the track, etc)
at any time during the 4 bars in which it is recording

Just for good measure..
I was just watching the Kid Beyond clip on Ableton's site. In it he gives a demo on how he uses his foot pedals.
There's a few parts where he's recording a loop and you can hear the part he just recorded BEFORE he hits a pedal to stop recording. How is this done?

what you hear can be tough to say, he can sing before and after the vocals are being recorded.
a tip I don't think has been mentioned yet.
Set global quantise to 4 measures, arm a track, click to once to record then like a 1/16 note later, click that clip again. The recording will stop at 4 measures and start looping itself right away, seamlessly.

Thanks Tone. That works nicely. But I'd still like to know if the above is possible. There are two or three vids that I've watched that seem like the recording stops automatically.
Maybe my ears are fooling me. Someone please watch the artist vids and help me tell me I'm not crazy.

I don't see anything mysterious in the video. What specifically?

I'm not sure how many different ways I can explain what I'm trying to figure out.
Oh well. Thanks for your help everyone.

i believe the answer your looking for is ctrl+space to only playback the highlighted portion then stop, this only works in arrangement view
