Video Sequencing with Live, VDMX and a Monome

Post by momo_the_monster » Wed Apr 11, 2007 4:17 am

I'm working on a setup for sequencing audio/video clips in a live performance setting, this is what I've gotten so far, using quite a combination of technologies.

Video and in-depth article here: AV Sequencing with Live

ALS file here: monome_sequence_live.als

Thanks for posting this up. I really like what's going on with vjkungfu.tv.

You mentioned Mackie control woes. Check this out:

It's a chart Namihei made that details all the Mackie functions, so you can avoid accidentally arming tracks & whatnot.

Hm - that link seems to be broken. I did see a thread on these forums documenting Midi Notes -> Mackie Control, but it didn't seem to be a pick-and-choose thing. Perhaps I'm wrong - is there a way I can assign my controller to send the 'undo' message (note 72), for example, but not the other ones? The caveat is that I don't want to be jumping around MIDI numbers just to avoid the ones that Mackie has lined up with Ableton Events.

The main thing is just avoiding channel 1 because that's the only channel used for Macie commands. If that link doesn't work right now, it should work later.

nobbystylus - sounds like we're on the same track! Check out AV Challenge #1 on VJ Kung Fu. You can add your own, and download the library we've made so far in a zip file

Follow Actions, MIDI effects, Live Clips, arpeggiator, virtual MIDI buses, dummy clips, etc are really powerful for both VJing and lighting. Follow Actions together with virtual MIDI buses is especially awesome.

I try to choreograph the video and lighting so they work together. For example, one Faderfox button launches the cameras into night vision mode, overlays a military-style night vision graphic over the live feed, and kills all lighting except the laser, which does beat-match tunnel sweeps across the room. Rapid-fire positive/negative effects on the video are matched with synched strobes. One button can send a thunder audio sample to the subs, flash the strobes and blinders, and trigger a nuclear explosion clip on the video screens.

Getting audio, video, and lighting to work tightly together can be really powerful if it's done well. Live makes it easy to improvise all three with great results.

You're really only limited by your imagination... and organizational skills! I'm really itching to do all this with a Lemur...

How do you set up the IAC BUS without getting midi feedback? I have played around quite a lot with it, but things tend to get unstable, and i think its to do with Midi Feedback loops...

If you've got a MIDI loop, you've probably made the MIDI loop.

Check your MIDI prefs. The IAC inputs and outputs can get pretty complex with advanced setups. It could be easy to route an output into the same input.
