if you click the cpu meter, it will disable the audio engine.
however I think that when you re-enable it, that it may resume from where it was... i.e. reverb tails still generating etc.
??

Press "Stop" twice?
That brings you back to measure 1... that is not a panic button, a panic button resets all midi notes to "off". If I have an unwanted string sound sustaining, with a panic button it will stop that sound.
thanks

Big difference between a sustaining note and a sustaining sound.
Double stop will kill sustain of a note.
If you want to sustain of an instrument to stop. Then turn down the Amp Release.

I don't understand what you mean by "turn down the amp release"
Thanks

An instrument has an amp envelope. One of those envelope parameter is "release". That controls the length of your tailing sound. Unless you're working with delay tails, in that case turn down the feedback.

Not really a "button". The panic button is something I'd like to hit, say... CMD+H, to instantly cut midi notes and reduce all releases to zero. Now if you say I should midi map it, that's still not what he's asking for, this should be something that has the effect of hitting stop twice but without interfering with playback. I used it alot in FLStudio, both to save my ears from poor choices with feedback and as a gapper fx.

Just map a key to your effect on/off if the problem is being caused by an effect, or a rotary to release on the instrument as Hoffman says
In what circumstance do you find it an issue though?

Panic button is an issue ever since sequencers are on the market. it is a basic feature that every sequencer has, just like having wipers on a car. No one would think of NOT having such a feature. So If Ableton didn't put a panic button in Live, then they must correct the situation ASAP!

Or?
I'm just wondering in what circumstances you find it an issue...s'all.
