Session Drums, how to set up your own multimic kit

Post by Angstrom » Fri Jan 25, 2008 1:21 am

For anyone who has Session Drums and is baffled about how to make their own multi mic kit and exactly how to handle the microphones (over-head, under Snare, room, etc ) heres a quick explanation of how the kits are set up which come with Session Drums. It may not be the best way to set up the routing - but it might help you understand what the hell is going on with those kits.

The bundled multimic Kits output those sample layers to special channels, they are the in-line mixer return channels.
Each drum has a selection of mics picking up the sound, for the typical kick they are: internal condenser, internal dynamic , under-snare, room, and overhead and for a typical snare it is : close, overhead, room, snare-bottom

So how do you handle all these nested mics... because (as you will have noticed) an 8 piece kit will have around 40 faders to control !!
well, you must make some inline effect return channels on the drum rack. Press the little 'R' on the Drum rick left side and then right-click in the area which just appeared (the inline return section) and chose "create return chain"
They don't need any effects on them - but you should make 3 of them and call them "under snare" , "overheads" and "room"

now in each of those many many drums in your drum kit you will need to go and find the various microphones and send the output to these channels.

Press the (I|O) button on the right side of the main interface to open up the routing dialog for each channel and I will show you how to send the mics for a snare drum.

In the mixer view press the little arrow next to the name of your snare, you should now see between 2 and 5 (or more) snare versions which came with your chose snare. Choose the first snare and unfold that in the same manner. You should now see some microphone channels. Most likely "Close", "Overhead", "Room" and "Snare Bottom".
Take a look at the routing section just above the mixer fader - if you can't read the label "Audio To" in that section you may need to drag the mixer channel wider. If you can see it - set the channel "Under Snare"(using the dropdown) to Drumrack | a Under Snare

this should have routed the microphone underneath the snare drum to the inline return channel you made which is called "Under Snare"

hopefully that is enough to get you going on the herculean task of routing all your microphones. You can see that you have a lot of fun ahead of you, if you like drop downs that is ;)
