Randomizing drum hits...but not the Kick!!!

Post by superistic » Tue Aug 19, 2008 5:00 pm

I wanted to try and create some more variation in my drum loops
I use battery 3 and create a midi clip in which i write the note pattern for all my drum hits, kicks included

I noticed that if i place a "random", "velocity" or "pitch" midi-plugin on the drum track, ill get those effects, but sometimes the kick will be effected (which i only want to happen occasionally or when i specify)

Is there any way around this, save putting my kick notes in a seperate midi clip?

Thanks

You could try doing it using Rack's Key Zones and use chains to affect different keys, leaving the Kick Keys unaffected.

yeah i tried that and thought it was working, i had the randomize midi plugin going and i thought it was ok, but on about 1 pass out of 10 whilst looping this clip the kick hit was random

maybe i need to go back and recheck my settings
Thanks

I must be missing something obvious, but just in case...

Why not just have two tracks? One for the kicks and one for the rest?

just make two MIDI tracks, route them both to the track with Battery on it.

Save one as the kick
use the other with all your random fx

yeah that was the other obvious option, just wanted to have the least amount of tracks possible

What I do to save screen real estate is to collapse one of those tracks to the minimum (so only one letter shows).

Put the kick on the lowest midi note and make all random go upwards from there.
