Dedicated VST computer.

Post by noktrnl » Fri Oct 10, 2008 1:02 am

Im looking at putting together some spair parts and making a computer system (AMD x2 6000+, 4g ram) so that I can have Ableton running on my main machine, and have all the VST's and other plugins process on the 2nd machine.

I have looked at the FX-Link (Name?) software and dont know if thats what I have heard about from other people. Is their a way to directly link computers together (COM port?) other than a LAN so I can process VST's and whatnots on the second machine and control everything with the primary?

If so, that would also bring up another question.
I would be using a interface with 2x firewire ports, would I need to have both computers hooked into the interface or would the INFO be directly routed to the primary computer?

Thanks!

PS. I searched and was not able to find anything other than the FX program and VST-Link.

I'm interested to see if this can work. It seems like running on the plug-ins externally would be a lot slower, thou.

Haven't tried it myself but this, now open source freebie, was mentioned over on the CDM blog:
