How does my planned PC build look for music production?

Post by SpinningBottles » Tue Jan 25, 2022 2:01 pm

Hey everyone! I hope this is the right thread for this. I'm building a new computer to upgrade my home recording setup as a hobby musician.

I've done my best to research appropriate components for my needs and budget, but as I'm neither advanced in building computers nor music production, I thought it would be smart to run in by you all. I'd appreciate if you could take a look at let me know if there are any glaring issues with this setup, or if there are any changes you'd recommend but still staying within my budget of under 1500 EUR.

I intend to run Live and Cubase, using mostly virtual instruments through Kontakt plus recording vocals and the occasional acoustic instrument. I'm using a Scarlett Focusrite 2i2 and Komplete Kontrol S88 controller, and I do mostly piano-based singer/songwriter and hybrid cinematic composition stuff.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Here's my planned build:

It's modern, so should be fine.

Love how people go budget on an audio interface. At least it's not onboard sound.

I couldn't afford anything else when I got it and it has served me well. Ready for an upgrade though. Open to suggestions.

There are so many choices. I use "budget" cards. I'm still using a M-Audio 2496 in one system until it dies or the system dies.
I also have a MOTU M2 hooked up to it. It runs at 256 samples but I have not pushed it yet,

My main system has an IK Aze IO but I haven pushed it yet.

In reality it boils down to how many inputs and outputs you need. Plus driver support has a lot to do with it.

I look at all of the audio interfaces I bought in my lifetime if I bought an RME Babyface it would still be in use.

Sometimes budget units don't offer the lowest latency. The quality of budget units is so much better these days along with the competition.

Wisdom fails when the most expensive part of a DAW build is the video card. They ignore the entire WATTs of a system.

I'd hate to do a system build now since hardware prices need to drop. If I had to do a budget build I would go with one of those AMD 6 core, 65 Watt CPUs. They come with a cooler. Intel is back to being pricey and heavier WATT consumption.

I've stopped posting advice on seeking approval from others when it comes to system builds.
