Anyway, the mere mention of vinyl (check the title) MUST mean that one is a DJ of course?[NOT] And as it's vinyl we're talking about....that MUST mean that the post was really a lead into having a debate about which format the DJ's of today should be using to show that they're staying in tune with technological advancements?[NOT]

Perhaps one doesn't own 1210's....... rather a Michell ORBE...... and one doesn't actually DJ.... rather just listens to and is interested in vinyl.... and music!

You guys!

yeah yeah.. get rid of you vinyl LPs ... all the more for us !
I get the most joy out of buying/listening to Vinyl...
it's a premium product...the artwork is BIG...
and the master is skillfully made...
the whole process of this format makes it superior to any other...

as for performance
are you kidding me ?! evolve ?! most of y'all were creaming your pants when timecoded vinyl...
turning the turntable to a midi-controller and playing mp3s..
is not really a huge step forward..

the one thing vinyl lacks is portability ..
huge.. and heavy...
but nevertheless a much finer (and more 'musical'..)product than buying downloads...

My advice to anyone that is going to be doing "DJ" style sets and/or is serious about writing Dance Music: Learn to Beat Match! Don't skip this step Just because the software can now do it for you. You are missing out an a vital part of dance music performance and production.

By learning to beat match, your ear will gain a hightened sense of timing and feel for the Groove. This will give you immeasurable benefits in song writing and production.

You really do not know what you are missing without this skill because you can't hear it yet!

You really think anybody on the dance floor cares that he's not using vinyl or thinks it sounds sub par? And I seriously doubt most DJs with 4 vinyl decks could do that kind of juggling and keep it steady.

That is evolving and using new technology.

Nice find - thats why ableton should have partnered with NI and Tracktor! :)

That would have been sweet.

I'm not saying that video is impressive in a Qbert way but in being able to play and transition through so many songs, loops, and cues, and move things along without being annoying or over the top. That is a skill. Maybe all that time vinyl DJs spend flipping through records and impressing themselves with their cueing and beat matching skills could be better spent bringing some next level shit to the dance floor. The guy in that video certainly didn't look bored and didn't have a lot of down time.

who cares?
so long as the end result is mad, doesn't matter if you are bringing it with vinyl or any other medium.
lets concentrate on the goodness... regardless.

We're not in disagreement there. Some DJs just don't want to swap one skill set out for another.
what kind of sense does that make, switch out one skill for another 8O why don't bass players just stop and play laptops, or the drums and why don't drummers just stop and play something else. you guys kill me, I can pull up 40 clips right now that show a dj on two turntables doing shit that you can't do with all of your programs and midi controllers, and on top of that I can pull up clips of djs on vinyl that will kill moldover and any other controllerist you can find ...

and you've got the nerve to say that they just don't want to evolve hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahah
And I'll match your 40 clips of DJs doing amazing shit on turntables with 100 clips of DJs on turntables putting people to sleep. You abuse youtube more than anybody on this forum and youtube isn't a snapshot of everybody's local clubs. I can pull up clips of people doing amazing things playing a saw and washboard. It's laughable that you think vinyl is going to stand the same test of time as drums and bass guitar.
what you haven't addressed is that you claim djs need to evolve which is nonsense at best no different than those people playing saws and washboards, why don't you tell them to evolve?
for your 100 clips of boring djs I could put up 500 clips of boring people checking their email or twiddling their little cut off/res knobs pffft

the djs I'm talking about are masters of an artform that your best homies can't match no matter how many cores they have in their computer, there's absolutely no
reason under the sun for them to evolve in the direction you're talking about. think about it like this, if they did evolve like you said then they wouldn't be able to do the things they can do right now.

yep..yep..I agree..
and a +1 for what s.student said..

for me... the whole act of going to a record store...
and physically browsing and listening and buying records..
is still a part of my love for music..
not many things as gratifying as spending half the day at the record shop..
getting home with a bag full of fine LPs...
it brightens up your day...
buying in the istore with paypal..not so much

a vinyl record is imo very similar to a music box...
it is playing in the real world ..
and is not a precise translation of bits...
plus...you can scratch it.. for real..
and need to take care of your records...for real..
and it sounds better than an mp3 going through 'vinyl distortion' device..
it skips sometimes...but never crashes...
also...
having to switch sides...and clean..and having big-ass album artwork..
makes you give more respect to the piece you're listening to...

for the technician... it was probly a nightmare...
but for the end-user(the listener)...vinyl lps are a treat !

go get yourselves a turntable and give some respect to this beautiful medium..

You're talking about a breed of DJ that is few and far between even at vinyl's peak. I respect what they do and would definitely say they have amazing skills but at this point in history they're like the virtuoso guitarist in 80's bands. Nobody wants to hear a shredding solo anymore.

Most DJs just play song after song and get on with their night and for that you don't need vinyl. But all this discussion really doesn't matter. Less and less songs are getting pressed to vinyl. More and more record stores are closing. More and more DJs are moving to digital.

The only real reason I get into these discussions is because when I started DJing it was with CDs and vinyl DJs would constantly give me shit without me provoking them in the slightest and they were far from the masters you're talking about. So I'm getting some small sense of satisfaction on how things are playing out.

well at least you're honest  , thing is that what you call 'djs that are few and far inbetween' is what I call something to aspire to as far as artforms are concerned, I obviously use a computer and ableton Live but I don't think any artform is something to 'get over' maybe get an understanding of but never get over, I don't think the artform of digital djing has surpassed the artform of vinyl djing yet, I believe both artforms have their virtuosos but I don't think the digital djing virtuosos have caught up with the vinyls ones yet.
I believe vinyl is still valid from every angle of every aspect, it sounds better, and it plays better, and the virtuosos are better, and like the dot says it's much much more enjoyable as a medium and holder of value (subjective)(but true). I understand that it is less prevalent than other mediums at this point depending on where you are but mp3s are everywhere too but you would never claim
that we should just move on from using wav files or aiff files or any of the other superior audio formats, and who needs 24bit when we've got mp3s that are everywhere and out number all of the superior audio formats put together.

do you really think the clip you posted of dude on 4 traktor decks is better than this (subjectively speaking of course)

Nah, I don't think the Traktor video is better than the videos you posted. I'm just going off my flashbacks to arguments with vinyl DJs and historically new technologies have always replaced what was once considered skilled manual labor. Just look at the top left article from this 1905 Onion newspaper.
