MESHUGGAH (polyrythmic extreme metal band)

Post by supamonsta » Fri Feb 05, 2010 5:02 pm

My fav' band since ages, and till my death.

watch these clips:

1995 (album "Chaosphere") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A_tSyJBsRQ (really funny vid, btw)
2008 (album "Obzen") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc98u-eGzlc
Live : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6VerKdcrOQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMmsVxn8d4k (3'23, 5'40 => love those riffs!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeJy7txqs1U

this band opened my eyes to a totally brilliant styke of composition, with the use of extreme polyrythmic riffs, cycling into classical 4/4 grid...

the tip to understand their music is to focus generally on the crash and the snare, but they also like to make everything porlyrythmic, loosing the listener into several layers of cycling riffs...

LOVE THEM.

HATE THEM.

Frackin" brilliant to my ears!

Word.

Whenever I'm in a rut rhythmically, I queue up Bleed and New Millenium Cyanide Christ. Then I end up trying to do that stuff in Live.

are you a drummer? this band made me buy a drumset years ago, but I noticed I had to learn proper 4/4 before everything else!!! aha ha, fuckin technicians, those guys have completely separate brain hemispheres!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvQx8Ic6MjM

here is a vid with the drums alone, for those who are interested in these polyriddims but have difficulties listening to metal

Textures" First album was great to my ears, but their new singer, well, sings too much for me...

there are lots of bands that follow meshuggah's influence, but to my ears none of them really managed to make things really 100% interesting... But lots of them are really worth a listening!

Frederik Thordendal's Sol Nigger Within (meshuggah's guitar man solo album)
Om mani (progressive metal with real singer, free album available for download, the singer is an old friend)
Textures (really great)
Vortice (really good meshuggah clone, Italy)
Dub Trio (really great one, instrumental with dub influences, produced by Mike Patton!!!!)
1980 (progressive rock with electronics and atmospheric funk feeling, french band)
Coprofago (meshuggah clone)
Synthetic Breed (album for cheap at CDbaby)
Threat signal (stop singing please)
Four question marks (good meshuggah clone from france)
Gizmachi (great one too)
Gogira (france, check their 2 first albums)
Bulb (mad one man band)
Periphery (the band with the one man band, but with a singer that should stop singing IMHO)
Tesseract (stop singing too)
Veil of maya (hummm)
The Attila Connection (great french one-man fool project)
Cloudkicker (great, and free EPs)
Fellsilent (really interesting too)
Cilice (great french band too)
Sybreed (industrial french band)
Trepalium (french deat metal band with meshuggah influences)
A Life once lost
Sikth (foolish one, really interesting but a bit too exciting)
Ion Dissonance (canada, great depressive one)
Grotesque through Incoherence (france, really fun, ended band)
Neurothing (czech republik)
Obsidian (Netherlands too, really interesting)
Decapitated (great death metal with meshuggah influences, reminds me of sepultura ambiances)
Erin Non Dae (another french band)
Hacride (again)
The faceless (first album)
Magnacult (produced and recorded by Texture's composer & engineer)
Mencea
Mistaken Element (great french band)
Scamp
Tandjent (meshuggah clone)
The Acacia Strain
Benea Reach
Calm (sweden, really fool, album available for free download)
Car Bomb (depressive)
Collapsar (progressive instrumental)

and many others I guess, Let me know if you know some other great ones!

cheers

tanks!

I use some polyrythms on my electro/house compositions, I know bumperfunk used something like that in his MIA's remix (Bang),

do you know some electro stuff using this particular techniques?

http://soundcloud.com/monstrejumo/wrong-way-of-life-2-0

this track presents a 1-minute electro-metal piece in the middle, with polyrythm à la meshuggah, with Jens Kidman's shouts acapella. My electro-tribute to meshuggah!

I'd be happy to hear and mix electro tracks that use polyrythms, let me know!!!!

4/4 is soooooo overdated...

Hahahah, that is awesome! :D

I really like Meshuggah's music, but the singer's vocal style gets old for me really quick. Just a matter of taste....I like other extreme vocal styles, just not the distorted scream so much. Awesome music!

am i allowed to laugh?
yes you're allowed to laugh, at least it makes you react

but I'd like you to explain why, is it so :

-unexpected?
-dumb?
-brilliant?
-misplaced?
-childish?
-...?
I have never heard anything like that before
I'm proud of that quote, indeed, I never heard any "electro" track using polyrythmic metal gimmics before... I can't avoid from beeing influenced by my favorite band...

This track is a kind of paradigm for me. Almost all tracks I make use at least a little bit of these polyrythms, for the main bass/synth patterns. Creating a simple 4/4 gimmick becomes a nightmare for me since I'm listening to meshuggah...

I really like Meshuggah's music, but the singer's vocal style gets old for me really quick. Just a matter of taste...
I understand that the vocal parts may be boring for lots of people... I listen to lots of metal music, and really for the most of the bands I like, I listen to the music with abstraction of the vocal parts... I like shouts, but I could live without them :x (With exception for meshuggah, I'm totally subjective with this band)

cheers

In the context of the topic about metal it was not unexpected.
Listening to it as an "electro" tune (what i think of as electro can vary it seems now), hearing that kind of sound in there, it was very unexpected and utterly hilarious for me personally.:D

Nice one for mixing it up!
