Will you be sacrificing or worshipping the goat? That makes all the difference when choosing.

If it's for milk and grass purposes then I'd go with a cow with the added benefit of steak.

well, i have owned goats. worse yet, i currently own goats.

First off, you always need to get multiples, 3 at least. If you do not want little goats, do not get a male, get three females.

In the world of goats, as livestock, males are for meat, and females are for milk and more goats. Or, they are for pets.

The best kinds of goats to get for milk are Nubian goats. They have floppy ears and look really funny when they run. If you are serious about the milk thing then you will need to get at least one male and at least two females.

The best goats to actually have if you are not too serious about the milk aspect are pygmy goats.

Here is why: if you get regular sized goats, you will need to get a fence that is Impenetrable. It must go all the way to the ground. below ground if possible, and probably best to be 6 feet high. Dogs probably cannot kill full sized goats, very possibly the opposite, but they might chase them around.

You may have people tell you that "oh, you just get an electric fence, a couple of strands of wire, that will keep them in". They are liars. They are lying liars. They are lying liars that either don't know about goats, or lying liars trying to sell you an electric fence, or lying liars that once had goats and want you to suffer like they did.

Because once the goats get out, they will go where ever they damn well please and eat whatever they want. Once they get out once, they will spend all their waking moments trying to get out, and they will always get out, and you will eventually want to kill them. You will want to kill them like a killing killer.

Pygmy goats, on the other hand, you can keep in a decent fence, about 4 feet high or so. But you still need wire (not chicken wire, either) to keep them in. However, dogs would be able to kill them, so the fence is to keep those out, too. We lost two goats to dogs. Pygmy goats might have problems giving birth, we lost a goat and her baby due to that circumstance.

We have never done the milking thing, we have them for undergrowth control. They excel at this, they eat everything-- thornbushes, everything. The regular size goats are better for this, though. We just got tired of them getting out.

If you have females and males and you milk the females, the males cannot get near the milk, they will make it stink. The males have a very strong odor, they pee on themselves for cologne, and the whole "horny goat" deal is a very accurate stereotype. Most people who raise them keep the males separated most of the time.

[edit] also, understand they will not just trim down your lawn, they will do thieir best to Decimate it. If you have shrubs, flowers, etc... those too, unless they are fenced off.

I vote for pygmyies, african dwarfs or the ever popular fainting goat.
