That's why it is a good idea to cut through all those plastic loops to prevent this from happening. Doesn't take very long, & you will know that you haven't trapped any animals.

^ plastic bags are even worse. turtles, fish, seals, whales and all sorts of other marine life mistake them for jelly fish or other food and die from suffocation. that's a big reason we're banning plastic bags in california (in addition to the huge waste they are).

I use them for my household garbage, I think they are more degradable than the big thick black plastic bin bags and break down with all the rubbish in the dump

none of it's good though.. it would be way better if we only had recycling and compost maybe, but I don't know how realistic that is - I just read that only something like 5% of people recycle their plastic bottles

On a slightly more positive note:

This is cool: http://www.fastcompany.com/1614864/para ... ble-island

Except reading about it here http://www.zmescience.com/science/ocean ... fic-ocean/
it's more like a "soup" of smaller plastic particles... not sure how you'd gather it up to recycle it.

We can't do that! Think of the harm you'll do to the economy and plastic bag industry.

Their profits are far more important than some turtles.

(seriously this happened in pacific northwest already)
