New Apple MacMini what's the verdict?

Post by Pasha » Tue Jun 15, 2010 12:57 pm

I was impressed (despite the 799 Euro price).
A part from graphics this little boy could run en-pair with my
2 years old iMac. Has an HDMI port (goodbye Apple TV) and can do
all I ask. If only it could record video....
I really think that for music production can be a very good workhorse
what do you think? Its specs are very close to 2 years old Mac lines
and similar to current Macbooks 13"....
I like the power-brick removal and the new size reduction. Cool.
Lately Apple is pushing hard on new products (iPad, iPhone, iOS, MacMini)
Soon should be Mac Pro time. They also updated the prices to reflect the
Euro vs Dollar change... Time to buy a lottery ticket.

This.

Seriously, what can be the verdict, when a piece of hardware just came out?! Let's wait for first hardware failures and other problems

I was hoping to see much higher CPU performances, at least 2,8 ghz, if not quad cores..

I don't know if it's really interesting, I was thinking of getting something like a mac mini for the studio, but I'd like the desktop stuff to be more performant than my laptop...

my laptop is macbook 2,4ghz with 4gb ram.

will a 2,6ghz mac mini with 4gb ram be really much more efficient??

and, if you want to upgrade the ram, it's only 2x4gb, and 4gb DDR3 1066ghz rams are really expensive for now... 4 ram slots would have been much more efficient...

I don't know, I just feel a bit disappointed, I don't see whats really great with these new gen minis :|

EDIT : Firewire 800... frak, my ultralite is firewire 400...

That doesn't matter, you can plug one into the other, I run my Fireface400 off the 800 port all the time.

Are you using a FW400 to FW800 dongle or a FW400 to FW800 cable?

I'm impressed. I wish my new 15" MacBook Pro had four USB 2.0 ports and an HDMI out.

What's up with the server version? Who's the customer for that?

::edit - okay.. I spent two seconds reading the product description. I get it.::

P.S. the it just works thing is really, really boring.

If OSX is your platform of choice, it's an exciting new option.
