Post by flowdesigner » Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:35 pm

Right-click on the file in question and select "Get Info." Make sure under the "Sharing & Permissions" tab that your user account has read & write permissions for the file. Click the padlock to change it if it's not.

EDIT: If it's multiple files then do the above with the folder that they're in.

Could be the file format on your external if you formatted it with a PC. I have the same problem with one drive when I switched to Mac, I can read but not write but I can copy so, er, maybe that's not it

that would be because your external drive is formatted NTFS...

the best solution is Paragon NTFS for Mac:

or Tuxera:

The Mac is always right, because it just works.
You are a lowly user and less than a cockroach so shut up, how dare you question its wisdom?!
You could try to write Steve Jobs stevejobs@apple.com to politely ask if he will grant you permission but don't get your hopes up.
Do you have official Apple RAM? If not you might have voided your warranty and they won't Apple care about you.
Apple RAM is more expensive than PC RAM but it doesn't get viruses or spyware.
It just works.

if you don't need to share the drive with Windows machines, then you can reformat it to HFS+ instead, using Disk Utility. you would have to shift all the data off the drive first though.
